would past de la w i l l (I). verb A. aux. pers. 2-a şi 3-a serveşte pentru formarea: a) viitorului în trecut;

he told us he would come at two ne-a spus că va veni la (ora) două; b) modului condiţional;

it would be better ar fi mai bine.

would past de la w i l l (I). verb B. frecventativ exprimă o acţiune obişnuită petrecută în trecut;

he would stand for hours watching the machine work supraveghea ceasuri întregi mersul maşinii.

a) exprimă perseverenţa, tenacitatea, încăpăţânarea;

I warned you, but you would do it eu te-am avertizat, însă dumneata ai ţinut neapărat să faci astfel; b) exprimă dorinţa;

come when you would veniţi când doriţi / când vă face plăcere;
